Recently, I’ve come across many entrepreneurs who are just starting out and need a business card. Some go with digital cards, but if you are printing cards and you’re doing it yourself, here are a few important considerations to keep in mind:
1. Correct color formatting
Please make sure all of your files are in CMYK color mode, not RGB, to ensure accurate color representation.
2. Think of the layout
Allow enough space around your card when you are creating your layout — be mindful of the margins. If you don’t allow enough space, your images or type can easily be cut off… or they sit too close to the edge and it looks unprofessional.
3. Proper File setup
If you are exporting your file from Canva, there is an option to save it with bleeds and crop marks when you export it as a PDF, and make sure you have a resolution of at least 300 DPI so that it prints clearly.
4. For the design: Keep it simple.
It’s a small space, so don’t cram too much on there. Pay attention to your typography choices to ensure the design is clean and legible.
When in doubt, I highly recommend hiring a professional designer (like myself, I work with many small businesses within their budget) or, at the very least, please work with a good printer. I like those that are local if you need help with paper choices, colors, finishes etc. There is also the ability to do a press check for larger jobs when you work with local printers. Of course there are some great online options as well, but I love to support my local Buffalo, NY businesses.
Remember, your business card is often one of the first impressions someone has of your company, make it great!
